GHFF ALERT

SB 122 the bill to extend ending deer season to January 31 state wide passed out of committee 2/27 and is going to senate rules committee. Please call or email rules committee members and ask them to vote against SB 122. I have attached rules committee contact information.

Reason for objecting to extending season.

  1. It would shorten the time small game hunters have for hunting rabbit, squirrel and raccoon with dogs to four weeks. Deer hunting clubs do not allow small game hunting with dogs until deer season is closed. Small game hunters do not feel it’s safe to turn dogs loose on private land or WMA’s in deer season. This sport cannot survive if it keeps losing hunting days.
  2. The sporting community cannot afford to lose a sport that introduces many kids and adults to the sport of hunting.
  3. The deer hunter has a minimum season of 12o days. The small game hunter with dogs has a maximum of 51 days after close of deer season. We don’t need to shorten this season.
  4. Bucks began shedding horns in January, so there will be bucks killed that are mistaken for does.
  5. There are places in Georgia where lengthened deer season would be harmful to an already decimated deer herd.
  6. It will affect trapping; trappers are not allowed to trap on deer hunting clubs and most private land in deer season.
  7. It will create a conflict between the bear dog trainer and deer hunter in January in North Georgia.

GHFF would not object to extending all deer seasons to third Monday in January, if rabbit, squirrel and raccoon season is extended to third Monday in March, giving back to the small game hunter with dogs what this bill proposes to take.
